About Spotlight on Learning

Welcome to the Spotlight on Learning website – dedicated to professional development in literacy and essential skills.

Literacy in the 21st century is about having opportunities. More than the ability to read and write, literacy equips people with the skills to access and participate in work, community and family life. As adults, we are constantly challenged to adapt to new technology, people and ideas.

Literacy is the foundational skill that enables us to meet these challenges with confidence. In October 2010, the Ontario Literacy Coalition, in partnership with the Eastern provinces, hosted a three-day conference called Spotlight on Learning: Becoming Agents of Change for leaders from literacy and essential skills, business, labour and community fields. With professional development as the focus, ideas, expertise and business cards were exchanged to further our knowledge and our work.

The purpose of this site is to feed the momentum and energy in the field with continued learning, news updates and stories of change that have been inspired by learning. Learning never stops and neither does change. New models, strategies and tools to better our work are always on the horizon and we want to stay current. In addition to the videos and presentations from the conference, on this site you will also find resources, links and updates on current trends in literacy and essential skills.

Together we can learn, share and inspire each other to make literacy fundamental in our communities.
