Atikokan Adult Learning Inc.
The Atikokan Adult Learning Centre is a small but dynamic organization, running a host of literacy and essential skills programs in the North-western Ontario region. In an impressive facility armed with flat screen computers, independent study rooms and even guitars, the staff have successfully created a welcoming and engaging learning space.
Their programs are tailored to the needs of their communities – job readiness, academic upgrading, GED training and much more.
Recent mining developments in North-western Ontario have opened potential employment opportunities for adult and outlying First Nations communities in the area. This has elevated the need for training programs and spurred partnerships between the learning centre, Métis, First Nations, Employment Ontario and Ontario Works.
Atikokan’s Adult Learning Centre has developed curriculum and offers a very successful and well-received “Basics of Mining and Construction Technology” program to their adult community and outlying First Nation reserves. Over 30 adults have graduated from the program and some have already found jobs.
