YMCA Toronto – Learning Opportunities Program
The YMCA has a long- history in providing adult literacy services. In 1987, the YMCA began The Learning Opportunities Program . This program provides many services including literacy and basic skills education, training in reading, writing and math and computer and life skills instruction. Funded by the City of York (where they were initially located until they moved to downtown Toronto in 1999), most students travel to the Toronto’s core, but a learning space is rented in York for those students who cannot.
The goals of the students include academic upgrading, furthering studies, maintaining and retaining employment, obtaining access to better jobs or promotions, and independence.
Because the YMCA is a large organization with programs that work with different communities, the need to collaborate and ensure that clients are getting all the services they need is key, and something that staff and volunteers alike strive towards every day.

During “Developing Partnerships” workshops at the Spotlight on Learning conference, it was mentioned to Jacqueline, Director of The Learning Opportunities Program, that the YMCA’s Learning Opportunities Program should increase their partnerships with other agencies. The team at the YMCA is doing just that – by engaging in more active participation in committees and networks, with the intention of putting The Learning Opportunities Program and literacy on the agenda.
Jacqueline has already begun working with some organizations on this initiative, while Tara is busy creating partnerships with online training programs. They are also interested in affordable (or free!) and usable assessment tools, as well as workplace literacy strategies.
