Embracing Technology

Stream Summary:

We live not only in a knowledge-based economy, but in a knowledge-based world. The technical tools within it may change, but the need to be technically literate or media literate is essential. Embracing technology emphasizes two main principles:

  1. Follow your audience
  2. Make technology a priority

Technology has strong potential for both marketing literacy and for use within literacy programs to enhance learning and retention. Social media brings a broad range of new and exciting tools that literacy practitioners can use to great advantage. Here is some advice from presenters:

When you decide to use a media tool, make it a priority and book time to be active in that space.

Go where your people are and learn that technical tool. Are your clients on Facebook? Can a wiki help you and your colleagues work better together? Can you build a community of tweeters?

Appropriate Uses of Technology for Literacy

Oral communication is inherent in humans, communicating through technology is not – and even writing is a technology! Paul asks, “Has the information age become the gaming age? Does that mean Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) need to be better designed to engage people and encourage usage?” He reminds us that technology can only help us do what we do well, even better.

Information and Learning Technologies in Adult Literacy - Moving Forward

AlphaPlus researches Information and Learning Technologies (ILTs) and their impact on teaching and learning in the literacy and essential skills field. They find a lot of technologies are already being used in literacy programming, but not a lot of information, experience and tools are being shared. To get the most out of ILTs, there is a need to develop a common language, de-institutionalize learning, expand e-learning and use a blended (online and in-class) learning approach.
